In the course of the meeting held on the request of the Latvian Party, they discussed prior orientations of Ukrainian-Latvian relations. In particular, the Parties discussed further strengthening of the bilateral relations based on the mutual cooperation. The Parties underscored the mutual interest in the development of the parliamentary component of interstate cooperation and essential activity of the groups of parliamentary cooperation of the legislative bodies of the both countries.
Oleh Bilorus, Chairman of the Committee, drew special attention to the issues of the development of cooperation in the sphere of trade-economic relations, scientific-technical cooperation, environmental protection, science, education and culture, etc.
A. Sjanitis emphasised that the interparliamentary contacts were extremely important. He also stressed that LatvianUkrainian relations had traditionally been friendly and dynamic. There is a constructive political dialogue; a contractual basis covering practically all co-operation spheres has been developed. The Ambassador also expressed his hopes for further deepening of the bilateral cooperation in all the spheres.
The participants of the meeting also discussed the proposals of the Latvian party regarding introduction of amendments to the procedure of electing the General Secretary of the Parliamentary Assembly of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Ukraine "deems the existing procedure in PA OSCE imperfect."
